Open House: Creating Character — With Gretchen Egolf

Our Open House workshops, offered once per season, provide a playful introduction to some key principles of Chekhov technique. Newcomers to the technique are welcome, as are those who wish to refresh their memories. In this Open House, by engaging with a process which explores Michael Chekhov’s principles of Imaginary Body, Imaginary Centres, and Subjective Atmospheres, in combination with a practice of reflecting and/or journaling, we will create a character.  Will this be the beginning of your next play or one person festival show?  Or will it be simply a creatively invigorating check-in?  This space will be open, playful, easy, and bold (if you’d like to be).  All levels of experience welcome, including beginners.  This workshop is for actors, directors, writers, theater makers, and whoever else is interested.  You will not be required to share your discoveries or characters with others if you don’t want to.

Gretchen Egolf of The Chekhov Collective is an actor and teacher, originally from America, now based in the UK.  She trained at Juilliard and her theatre work includes Broadway, Off-Broadway, West End, Off-West End, and major theatres around the US.  She has performed extensively in television and film in the US (and now UK).   As an acting instructor, Gretchen specialises in the Michael Chekhov technique, having studied with many master teachers through MICHA, Michael Chekhov Studio NY, and Praxis in the US, and Michael Chekhov Studio London and MC Europe on this side of the Atlantic.  She is a member of Michael Chekhov UK and currently she teaches and directs at LAMDA and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.  More info at www.gretchenegolf.com
