Open House: Atmosphere

This workshop marks the start of the partnership between The Chekhov Collective and Bold Theatre. It will explore Chekhov’s technique of Atmosphere and how this can be used as a creative and accessible tool by actors, directors and theatre-makers.
This workshop is open to complete beginners and those with experience of Chekhov Technique. Please wear comfortable clothing.
The session will be facilitated Cass Fleming, Sian Clarke and Phoebe Naughton.
Weekly Classes: Introduction to Movement Qualities

These weekly Wednesday evening classes will introduce Chekhov’s Movement Qualities. Gretchen will lead the first four sessions, exploring these fundamental tools of Michael Chekhov technique. Sian will then lead the following three sessions, applying those tools to character and text work from a selected play. These classes will be fun and focused, and adaptable to participants’ needs.
Note: although this is traditionally an acting technique, these sessions are very open to anyone wanting to tap into their creativity.

Chekhov and Clowning Workshop

Clowning was central to Michael Chekhov’s practice and it featured in his training programme at Dartington College of the Arts. The Collective is continuing its tradition of exploring play and clowning with this session.
This workshop is open to complete beginners and those with experience of Chekhov Technique / Clowning. Please wear comfortable clothing.
This workshop will be led by two clowns who are part of the Chekhov Collective community, Cordelia Stevenson and Hester Welch.
Practice Research Workshop: Directing Movement with Chekhov Technique

If it is not dance, what does a movement director do? In this workshop we will explore how a movement director might use some of Chekhov’s tools to open up a text in realistic, non-naturalistic and stylized ways. Participants will be offered the chance to sample both in a playful way that will foster their individual creativity. This session represents a dynamic knowledge exchange between these two practitioners in relation to this area of practice.
This workshop is open to anyone with a passion for performance, no experience of Chekhov Technique is necessary. Please wear comfortable clothing.

Festival of Joy: Sharing of works in progress by the Chekhov Collective Community

The Chekhov Collective in partnership with Bold Theatre are excited to present a Festival of Joy on Saturday 6 June 2026! This will be an evening festival of work currently in development created by artists within the Chekhov Collective community. There will be a dynamic range of work and approaches and tickets are pay what you can.
Chekhov Technique 3 Day Intensive

This three-day intensive workshop is led by a team of the Chekhov Collective’s core members and will introduce participants to a selection of Chekhov’s techniques. All the facilitators are highly experienced Chekhov practitioners and will bring complementary, but different, approaches to the technique in line with their individual creativity. Following the three-day workshop there will be an online reflective session. This online session will focus on the use of the technique for performing arts teachers, facilitators, directors and choreographers.
