Chekhov in the creative process of contemporary circus

This was a ‘sharing of work’ session, which explored questions around Chekhov and creative processes of contemporary circus. Anna-Katharina shared her research and experiences from working with professional circus artists and creations. She reflected on questions such as: Where and how do we apply the tools of the technique? What is the difference when using them circus work? Can we use the Chekhov technique to learn „not to act“, but to have tools to experience as it is needed in the circus work?

Anna-Katharina has been working in the field of professional and inclusive contemporary circus for 15 years. Several years ago she started to explicitly research the use of the Michael Chekhov technique in circus through workshops and work as an outside eye, and also through creating new work with her company.

Anna-Katharina is a trained actress, theatre and circus maker, teacher of the Michel-Tschekhov acting technique and coach for artists and performers. She has been working with the Michel-Chekhov acting technique for 20 years. She is the founder of the “Zentrum für bewegte Kunst e.V.” in Berlin. As director of many circus shows of different formats, Anna-Katharina has worked with various artists, musicians and dancers. After 15 years of working with the inclusive circus company Sonnestich, she founded her own company “7women company” and is currently developing a piece called NORA.  In addition to her work as a director, Anna-Katharina regularly teaches at the Michael Chekhov International Academy, Die Etage (Circus School Berlin), at IN.ZIRQUE® (ZBK), works as a mentor for the support programme ZirkusON, gives national and international workshops (e.g. Russia, Palestine, Belgium) and coaches artists. She has written about her Chekhov work in various publications. Next publication “Notes on Creation” by Declan Mee and Oli Pinchbeck, Katapult Berlin.
