Chekhov and Community — with Effie Makepeace

This is a practice sharing workshop which will focus on applications and adaptations of Chekhov working with community groups in Malawi and the UK.  Effie will share thoughts, examples, exercises, successes, failures, questions and ideas!  The session will include an introduction to Effie’s work and practice, as well as practical elements for us to try and discuss together.

This session will be of particular interest to artists working in non-professional settings, applied theatre or community practice but is open to anyone interested in adaptations and experiments with Chekhov.

Effie Makepeace has been using theatre with communities for 12 years – running workshops, conducting research, devising and touring performances.  She works with groups in UK, Malawi and India on projects which range from a few days to sustained engagement over several years.  Her practice is a patchwork of different influences and ideas, one of whom is Chekhov whose work she has referenced, played with and adapted in different ways – successfully and unsuccessfully!  She is currently writing her Phd at the University of Sussex and her research and practice interests are: theatre for research, theatre for reflective practice, collaborative and decolonial methods.
