Chekhov Meets the Singing Voice — with Deb Garvey

Time: 2-5pm UK time | Location: Goldsmiths, London

This workshop explored the singing voice through integrated elements of Chekhov and Linklater voice work.  This was for anyone interested in tapping into the potential of their expressive range and included  sequences that focus on both the individual and collective voice in a supportive, exploratory spirit of play.  Participants brought along a short  unaccompanied traditional or folk song which they used to delve into the work offered.

Deborah Garvey is a voice, dialect and singing coach who draws on her training and experience as an actor and singer.   She has an MA in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and was a Lecturer in Voice at Central for six years before joining the BA Acting voice team at RADA in 2019.  She continues to work as a visiting lecturer at Central on both the BA Acting Collaborative and Devised Theatre and MA Music Theatre programmes.  Deborah is also a designated Linklater voice teacher and this work has taken her to Vilnius and Zagreb as a guest practitioner.  She has also presented at conferences on a range of voice topics including connecting the spoken and sung voice and the politics surrounding RP in actor training.

Deborah offers voice and dialect support on  professional productions, the most recent being ‘Be More Chill’ at the Other Palace Theatre London in early 2020.

She composes for the stage and continues to perform when teaching commitments allow!  She is passionate about the potential of the human voice!
